Divide and Rule: Sharia Law Comes to Libya

The Libyan branch of al-Qaeda has announced its plan for Islamic Sharia law.

On Sunday, the Telegraph reported that Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, the chairman of NATO’s National Transitional Council, made the announcement.

Abdul-Jalil is from the Harabi tribe in eastern Libya. Harabi is connected to the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG ) and al-Qaeda. The LIFG is now known as the Islamic Movement for Change and has vowed to turn Libya into an Islamic state.

“We are an Islamic state,” said Jalil.

“Mr. Abdul-Jalil’s decision — made in advance of the introduction of any democratic process — will please the Islamists who have played a strong role in opposition to Col Gaddafi’s rule and in the uprising but worry the many young liberal Libyans who, while usually observant Muslims, take their political cues from the West,” reports the newspaper.
